The
NASA/UL Lafayette Regional Application Center in coordination with USGS,
Fugro Chance, GEC, and the Lafayette Assessor’s Office will be hosting
GIS Day on November 19, 2003. The purpose of GIS Day is to bring
awareness to the community of the uses of Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) by opening our doors to schools, businesses, and
the general public to show real-world applications of the technology.
GIS Day is a way of educating children on the uses of GIS
technology through geography.
GIS Day is part
of the National Geographic Society's exciting new initiative, Geography
Action, which is a yearlong initiative encompassing key educational
achievements such as GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week.
Geography
Awareness Week since 1987 has served to promote geographic literacy in
schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education
of children. This year GIS Day will tailor to the 5th grade
students in Lafayette Parish. We
will have several vendor booths set up with hands-on applications that
the children can really identify with, as well as, presentations
demonstrating the uses of GIS through use the technology we have here at
the NASA/UL RAC.
We invite
all teachers and 5th grade students to participate in GIS
Day, which will be held at the NASA/UL Lafayette Regional Application
Center, 2nd floor Abdalla Hall located in the Research Park
across from the National Wetlands Research Center at 635 Cajundome
Boulevard.
Please
give us a call at (337) 482-0670 to set up a time to visit us on
November 19th.
